GO OUTSIDE THE BOX WITH DIE CUTTING
Everyone knows that as a general rule, breaking up straight lines is one of the best ways to grab attention. But it’s not always obvious that this can apply to printed media too. Die cut direct mail pieces, for example, stand-out massively compared to the common A5, DL or A6 sizes.
And when you consider that a little extra spent on the print process will lead to increased sales at the very least, the little extra investment in a process such as die cutting will always be more than worth it!
It's not just for leaflets and mailers though - you'll achieve amazing results from a die-cut brochure cover, swing tag, calendar or product packaging.
An alternative option for multi-page leaflets or note blocks is ram-punching. Basically, everything is folded/collated/glued first, then has the shape punched out of it. Confused? Have a look at our Sandwich Pad case study.
Die cut direct mailers generally require a customised die to create the shape (sometimes, on the off-chance, we'll have the shape you want in stock though!). If we do have to produce a customised die it will last for years so it's just a one-off cost.
You'll need to supply us with the outline of your shape so that we can check it over and then have it converted into the die. Be careful of sharp corners or deep troughs in the outline though as they're likely to need smoothing out or rounding off to make it work.
There's not much you need to know about this as it is very straightforward for you to organise and we'll do all the hard work for you. Just make sure that you're not overdoing the die cut so that the flyer becomes weak (IE, don't leave very thin strips of card by having the die cut area too close to the edge of the page). If you want to go really detailed with your cut patter, it's time to move over to laser-cutting.
Another thing to remember is to make sure your design fits within a standard envelope size if you're posting them out. It isn't fun to find that your spectacular new die cut leaflet takes your mailing into the next band of postage!
