WHAT IS LITHO PRINTING?

Lithographic printing is the backbone of what we do and is a constant source of creative inspiration for us.

Just think about it: we see fresh ideas every day, no two projects are ever exactly the same, the printroom is full of colour and there’s always a buzz around the place.

If any of us in the office need inspiration, a quick nip downstairs to hear the machinery roaring and see some amazing marketing being carefully crafted into a beautiful brochure invariably does the trick.

That’s the beauty of litho printing. It’s so flexible, yet so precise. We’ve been working hard to turn our operation here into a high-speed workhorse so that your deadlines become our benchmark. In fact, we’ve been really touched by all the lovely compliments you’ve given us; even the FOGRA auditor told us that our colour accuracy is one of the best he’s seen.  And our work has won awards too.

Litho printing is awesome.  It’s a perfect blend of futuristic technology and traditional craftsmanship.  Have a look around our products and portfolio, or get in touch with us for samples and more.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What exactly is litho printing?

Lithographic printing (also known as offset or offset litho printing) is the process whereby digital artwork is transferred to a substrate (in our case, paper or card). The process begins with converting the original artwork to the four colour profiles within CMYK, as well as any special Pantone colours. Each individual colour profile is then applied to an aluminium printing plate by laser etching.

The plates (one for each colour) are mounted to rollers on the press which are also connected to the ink ducts and the ink is transferred to the correct areas on the paper as it goes through. That’s it in a nutshell!

What are the advantages of litho printing?

Litho printing achieves one of the highest quality print reproductions available, with the ability to print very fine details and excellent colour vibrancy. It is ideal for small, medium and large runs.

Litho printing on gloss, silk, matt or uncoated papers gives a smooth, sharp impression.

We can also apply various coatings through the litho print process, including ultra-matt, silk, gloss and ultra-gloss. Printing on uncoated paper gives a stunning tactile effect with litho printing.

So if you’re looking for the best quality printing on paper or card, litho printing is definitely the one to choose.

What are the disadvantages of litho printing?

Litho printing is limited in terms of paper thickness, usually not less than 80gsm and not more than around 500gsm.

Due to the setup time involved with getting the registration bang on and the colour balanced correctly, litho tends to be expensive for very short runs (below 250 or so)

What finishing techniques can be used alongside litho printing?

Pretty much any finishing technique can be used after litho printing! It’s commonly used for perfect bound and stitched brochures, flyers, leaflets, direct mail and stationery. Litho printed products can have all manner of finishes applied including lamination, foil blocking, spot UV varnish, die-cutting, scratch-and-sniff, embossing etc

How is litho different to digital printing?

In terms of the finished print results, litho gives a much sharper, smoother finish and has less of a ‘glossy’ sheen (where required). Litho printing is perfect for uncoated papers too.

Digital printing is ideal for very short runs and also for personalisation, which can’t be achieved with litho printing.

How do I set up my print artwork files for litho printing?
