Everyone knows that as a general rule, breaking up straight lines is one of the best ways to grab attention. But it’s not always obvious that this can apply to printed media too.
Die cut direct mail pieces, for example, stand-out massively compared to the common A5, DL or A6 sizes.
It’s not just for leaflets and mailers though – you’ll achieve amazing results from die cut brochure covers, swing tags, posters or product packaging.
This is the method we use to cut special shapes (IE anything other than rectangle or square). It means you can create a custom shaped direct mailer, leaflet etc. Die cutting is also what we use to create a cut-out section in the middle of a brochure cover or packaging card.

What is custom die cut printing useful for?
Die cut printing requires a customised die to create the shape. You’ll need to supply us with the outline of your shape so that we can check it over and then have it converted into the die. Be careful of sharp corners or deep troughs in the outline though as they’re likely to need smoothing out or rounding off to make it work.
There’s not much you need to know about this as it is very straightforward for you to organise and we’ll do all the hard work for you. Just make sure that you’re not overdoing the die cut so that the flyer becomes weak (IE, don’t leave very thin strips of card by having the die cut area too close to the edge of the page). If you want to go really detailed with your cut pattern, it’s time to move over to laser-cutting.
The main thing to remember is to make sure your design fits within a standard envelope size if you’re posting them out. It isn’t fun to find that your spectacular new die cut leaflet takes your mailing into the next band of postage! Yes this is possible, either cutting an outline or a logo. Remember that any die cut lettering will be very flimsy and may need to be hand-bound because of the weakness of the die cut areas. Talk to our team for specific guidance to help you understand what will work best for your brochure.
